Your Powerhouse, Explained

"Engage your powerhouse." It's one of the most common cues in Pilates, and one of the most misunderstood.

So what exactly is your powerhouse, and how do you find it?

More than your abs

Your powerhouse is the centre of your body. It includes your deep abdominal muscles, your back, your pelvic floor, your glutes and your hips. Together, these muscles support your spine and keep you stable as you move.

It's not about a six-pack. It's about strength from the inside out.

Why it matters

Every Pilates movement starts from your centre. When your powerhouse is switched on, your movements become more controlled, your posture improves and your body is better supported through everyday life, from carrying shopping to sitting at your desk.

How to find it

Lie on your back with your knees bent. Breathe in wide through your ribs. As you breathe out, gently draw your belly button in towards your spine and feel a light lift through your pelvic floor. Keep breathing, and hold that gentle connection.

It should feel supportive, not like you're bracing or holding your breath.

Working it in class

In every Fitt. class, your instructor will cue you to connect to your powerhouse. Over time, the connection becomes automatic, and you'll find yourself using it without thinking.

Strength classes are especially focused on deep powerhouse work, with a slower pace and plenty of time under tension.
