Mat or Reformer: Which Should You Choose?

One of the questions we're asked most often is whether to book Mat Pilates or Reformer Pilates. The honest answer? Both are brilliant, and they work best together.

Here's how they compare, so you can choose what suits you.

Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates uses your own bodyweight, sometimes with small equipment like a ball, band or magic circle. Without springs to support you, you rely on your own strength and control to hold each position.

That makes Mat Pilates a fantastic way to build deep core strength and body awareness. It's also the foundation of everything you do on the Reformer.

Reformer Pilates

The Reformer adds springs, straps and a moving carriage. The springs can add resistance to make an exercise harder, or support you so you can move with better form.

Reformer classes are dynamic and full-body, and the variety of positions means there's always a new challenge.

So which one is harder?

Neither, and both. Some exercises feel easier on the Reformer because the springs help. Others feel much harder because the springs add load. On the mat, there's nowhere to hide: it's just you and your control.

Why not both?

Many of our clients mix the two. Mat Pilates sharpens your technique and core connection, and you'll feel the difference the next time you step onto the Reformer.

Our memberships cover Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates, Yoga and Barre, so you can move between them as your week changes. We have two studios, one for Reformer and one for Mat, Yoga and Barre.
