What Is Barre? Everything You Need to Know

Barre has become one of the most popular classes at Fitt., and it's easy to see why. It's energising, it's challenging and it's a lot of fun.

If you've never tried it, here's what to expect.

Where Barre comes from

Barre is inspired by ballet, with influences from Pilates and strength training. You'll use a ballet barre for balance, but you don't need any dance experience at all.

What a class looks like

Barre focuses on small, controlled movements, often repeated many times. Think pulses, holds and tiny ranges of motion that target specific muscles until they start to shake.

Classes typically work your legs, glutes, arms and core, with plenty of standing work at the barre and some time on the mat.

Why the shake is a good thing

That shake you feel in your legs is a sign your muscles are working hard. Barre builds strength and endurance, and it does it in a way that's low impact and kind to your joints.

Posture and poise

Because Barre draws on ballet, there's a big focus on posture and alignment. You'll find yourself standing taller, both in class and out of it.

Barre and Pilates

Barre pairs beautifully with Pilates. Both focus on control, alignment and core strength, so the work you do in one supports the other.
